Consumer-Managed Personal Care Services are an option under the Independent Living (IL) Rehabilitation Program.
Consumers, in partnership with their independent living counselors, plan for part-time personal assistance to facilitate activities of daily living, including access to the community. The consumer hires, fires, pays and performs all duties of the employer, including paying required state and federal taxes. The consumer is reimbursed for the service provided by the personal assistant worker.
Before this service is provided, a qualified professional (such as a registered nurse, occupational therapist or physical therapist) evaluates the independent living skills and needs of the consumer. The counselor and consumer discuss the recommendations and agree upon a total number of personal assistance hours to be provided.
This service benefits individuals with significant disabilities who are working toward independent living goals.
