Provide services and protection to individuals and families experiencing serious health and safety needs who are not, at least temporarily, able to assist themselves with the goal of helping them to return to independent, community living.

Assure that children being served in out-of-home placements receive assessment and treatment services designed to assist them in their return to home and/or community living.

Service Description
Murdoch
Developmental Center, located in Butner, is the state-operated developmental center for North Carolina’s central region. The three statewide services geared specifically to children and adolescents through Murdoch Developmental Center are:
STARS (Specialized Treatment for Adolescents in a Residential setting) which serves adolescents, ages 13 through 17, who have a dual diagnosis (developmental disability and mental illness).
The length of stay is up to 1 year.
PATH (Partners in Autism Treatment and Habilitation) serves children, ages 6 to 16, with autism spectrum disorder and serious behavioral challenges.
The length of stay is up to 2 years.
TRACK (Therapeutic Respite Addressing Crisis for Kids) serves children ages 5 through 17 who have moderate to profound intellectual disabilities and/or autism spectrum disorders and are in an emergency crisis situation.
The length of stay is between 3-45 days.
