Service Description

Inpatient behavioral health services provide treatment for people less than 21 years old in a hospital setting 24 hours a day. Supportive counseling, therapeutic interventions, nursing and medical care are provided under the supervision of a psychiatrist or a physician. This service is designed to provide continuous treatment for Medicaid recipients with acute psychiatric or substance abuse problems.  Services may also include longer term residential treatment services.

Inpatient behavioral health services are provided both in private psychiatric hospitals, general hospitals and state operated hospitals.  Inpatient services have to be authorized by a Medicaid contractor.

Inpatient behavioral health services are optional.  Medicaid's Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment (EPSDT) program requires that states offer these services, if medically necessary, to children up to age 21.
